AFL and NRL teams cause a (Meltwater) Buzz on social media
Posted by Felicity on Sep 30, 2011 in Media Announcements | 6 commentsWith sports fans in a frenzy as the AFL and NRL Grand Finals draw near, Meltwater Group used its social media monitoring tool to track which of the footy teams were being talked about most online.
While the current odds for the AFL Grand Final put Collingwood only slightly ahead of Geelong, social media tells another story. According to Meltwater Buzz, Collingwood has received 70 per cent of online mentions compared to 30 per cent of Geelong mentions.
In the NRL Grand Finals, whilst Manly are the clear favourites to win, the NZ Warriors are being talked about most generating 55 per cent of online chatter compared to Manly’s 45 per cent.
Overall, which football code is being talked about most online? AFL looks to be the clear winner generating 62 per cent of online mentions compared to 38 per cent of online mentions about NRL.
Alicia Kennedy, Area Director of Meltwater Australia and New Zealand, admits that “the most talked about footy teams aren’t necessarily going to be the ones who win on the night however, it’s really exciting to see who’s getting the most online chatter in the lead-up to the two Grand Finals this weekend. It shows how our social media monitoring tool can be used in a fun way to tap into what the public are really thinking and who they are talking about.”
Note, the analysis of social media coverage took place on the 26th – 29th September.
